How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
There are a few different ways that teeth whitening can work. One common method is using a bleaching agent to remove stains and discoloration from the teeth. This bleaching agent can be in the form of a gel, paste, or strip that is applied to the teeth. Another common method is using a laser to remove stains and discoloration from the teeth.
At our dental clinic in Magherafelt, We will carry out a tooth whitening procedure using either 6% hydrogen peroxide or 10% / 16% carbamide peroxide to brighten the colour of the natural teeth.
What’s the procedure?
During your first appointment, we will examine your teeth and gums to ensure that they are free of any disease or decay. We will also discuss your goals and desires for whitening your teeth.
The procedure is then initiated by getting a mouth guard made for the shape of your mouth.
Once ready, after your teeth and gums have been examined, our dentists will prepare your mouth for the whitening procedure. This usually involves placing a rubber dam (a small sheet of latex) over your teeth to protect your gums and oral tissues from the whitening gel. The rubber dam also helps to keep the gel on your teeth, where it can have maximum effect.
The treatment takes approximately 3 weeks. You may see improvements within the first few days but it can take up to 3 weeks for the best results.

FAQs
Is there a risk that teeth will be damaged by whitening?
Teeth whitening can cause damage to your teeth if it is not done properly. If the whitening agent is too strong, it can cause the enamel on your teeth to break down. This can lead to sensitivity and pain. We are here to make sure that this process is safe for you and your teeth.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
There is a small amount of discomfort associated with teeth whitening, but it is not generally considered to be painful. Some people may experience sensitivity to the whitening products, but this is usually temporary and goes away within a few days.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. It all depends on how well you take care of your teeth and how often you expose them to staining agents.
Can you whiten fillings, crowns or veneers?
If you are considering whitening your teeth, it’s important to know that not all dental restorations can be whitened. This is because whitening products only work on natural tooth enamel. Dental restorations, such as fillings, crowns, and veneers, are made from materials that are not affected by whitening products. If your goal is to have a uniform smile, you may need to consider replacing your old dental restorations. Please reach out to us about your restorations so we can advise on the best course of action.
